We are looking for an experienced VP of Product who will focus on the client journey and design the product to maximize Client Success and the Lifetime Client Value of the clients. The VP of Product will own the definition of our product strategy and must be able to articulate the vision of the product. You will need to have a deep understanding of our products, identify gaps, and to generate new ideas in order to drive results. We are unique from most companies in that we don’t see ourselves as a “software” company, or an “education” company. Rather we see ourselves as a success company. The primary driver for success of the product is the success of the client, usually measured by increase in revenue, gross profit, and net profit over the long term. We have a variety of ways we measure this and are always looking to improve. But in order to achieve success for the client, we may decide to enter multiple areas of product. We have 3 currently:

SaaS

Coaching (Recurring Revenue), Training (One-Time), Events

Wealth Management / OSJ

What problems are the most painful for the client? How do we know for sure? How do we rank them against other problems we could work on? If we solve them, what are they willing to pay? If the problems we’re focused on have a high willingness to pay, do they also have a high gross profit margin when factoring ongoing delivery costs?

Solution Invention

We always ask our customers what they want. But that’s only a part of the picture. We always try to ask ourselves, “based on the problems our clients have told us they have, what are the solutions they can’t even imagine”. We then use those categories to create new product categories that don’t compete, but reinvent the way the problem is being solved and either complement or dominate others in the marketplace.

Testing & Gather Feedback

While we haven’t done the best at this historically, it’s clearly the most important part of the process as it informs the first two. We use Facebook groups, 1on1 calls, group calls, and Qualtrics surveys to gather information. We have virtually unlimited access to tax and accounting firms in our market given the nature of the work we do with them. We want to get better at building a hypothesis for each product release before it’s released. Does it shorten time to activation? Does it improve retention? Does it drive usage? What’s the purpose and if it doesn’t influence that outcome in the way we predicted, we make a decision to further iterate or roll it back.

Metric Driven Management

We believe that feelings and anecdotes are vitally important to understanding the picture of the client experience. But when extrapolating those feelings to the customer base as a whole, we need to bump our biases and prediction against real usage data, surveys, marketing, sales, and client success results.

Coordinating With Other Departments

We view the company as revenue oriented. The CEO of the company did the first 7,000 sales calls for the organization. This gave him an incredible amount of information about our clients, their needs. Everybody in the organization including the product team is expected to talk to clients, and understand how to sell them. We believe sales is an integral part of value creation. Coordination with marketing, sales, and client success to understand the needs they are seeing and ensure the product is reflecting those over time is a crucial part of success in the product department.

While Accountingtax looks to the long-term, we move and make changes quickly. Normal companies have a traditional onboarding time of 90-180 days, here, you see your impact the first week.

To be a good fit for this role…

You need to have experience and understand how to work with a niche. You don’t have to have worked with accountants, but you need to be completely dedicated to learning the niche, product and team.

Experience working with recurring revenue is required

B2B Experience, preferably in professional services (Medical, Legal, Tax, Accounting)

Experience working with multiple products, ours are: SaaS

Coaching (Recurring Revenue), Training (One-Time), Events

Wealth Management / OSJ

How you’ll contribute:

Create a program for defining, monitoring, and expanding client success through the development of our products and services

Responsible for market success of the product

Advocate for the development and implementation of significant features and/or improvements

Build and manage a highly talented Product team and collaborate with multiple stakeholders in the organization

Build knowledge of customers, competitors, and the market to translate product requirements

Communicate market positions that are clear, differentiated, defensible, and monetizable

Plan and execute compelling Go-to-Market strategies

Arm the sales team with the tools and knowledge it needs to be successful when marketing the product

Requirements What You’ll Bring

5+ years experience with a SaaS or other recurring revenue/service business model;

A background in Engineering preferred, but not required

Ability to create an environment that fosters high quality, metrics-driven experimentation and leads to impactful improvements with brand-positive company impact

Strong problem solving, influencing, conflict resolution and decision-making skills

Experience in leading a team and operating in a fast moving start-up environment

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

Energetic and collaborative team player who feeds off of goal setting and achievement

A track record of building consensus and delivering high-impact global communications initiatives

Ability to support multiple projects and complex work streams

Fearless curiosity, ownership, and accountability

Demonstrated ability to make sound judgments and create strategic solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought and comparison/selection of complex alternatives, and apply interpretative thinking to identify, understand and define problems and develop innovative solutions.

Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate actions to achieve desired results.

Familiarity with the software we use is a plus: Salesforce, Qualtrics, Roadmunk/Clickup, Slack, Zoom, Click Funnels, GSuite, Zapier, Helpscout.

Front end: Vue.js, Nuxt.js, TypeScript, Less, ElementUI, WebAssembly (Go), all statically hosted on AWS S3/CloudFront.

And some AWS Lambda functions in Go and Node.js.

Additional information: Communication with API is encrypted in addition to SSL and sensitive data such as tax returns are encrypted browser to browser using WebCrypto API with key sharing between users without exposing any secrets to API. SRP used for authentication.
